Comparison
Nevis vs. Belize trust.
The two most cost-effective credible offshore jurisdictions, compared without the sales pitch.
Short answer: both offer strong statutory protection at a fraction of Cook Islands cost. Nevis has the edge where the plan benefits from pairing the trust with a Nevis LLC, and its bonding requirement is a meaningful practical deterrent. Belize has the edge on the aggressiveness of its statute and often on price.
Side by side
| Nevis | Belize | |
|---|---|---|
| Recognition of U.S. judgments | Not recognized | Not recognized |
| Burden on creditor | Beyond reasonable doubt | High statutory burden |
| Bond to commence proceedings | Cash bond historically required | Not the central feature |
| Seasoning | Statutory limitation period applies | Historically none |
| Companion entity | Nevis LLC, among the strongest charging-order statutes anywhere | Belize IBC |
| Relative cost | Low to moderate | Low |
What usually decides it
In practice the companion entity decides this more often than the trust statute does. A Nevis trust owning a Nevis LLC is a genuinely strong combination: the trust removes ownership from your name and the LLC adds charging-order protection at the asset level. If the plan calls for an operating entity or for holding real property through a company, Nevis usually wins.
Where the plan is simply a trust holding liquid assets and cost is the binding constraint, Belize is difficult to beat.
The same caution applies to both: a strong foreign statute governs what a creditor must prove abroad. It does not shorten your exposure under U.S. fraudulent transfer law or under the federal ten-year bankruptcy look-back.
Which is right for you
If the structure includes an entity, choose Nevis. If it is a straightforward trust and price is decisive, choose Belize. We work across all of these jurisdictions and have since 1992, which means we can tell you candidly when the cheaper option is the right one, or when neither is. Before you choose on price
Jurisdiction is the last decision, not the first. Timing, funding, and control determine whether any of these structures holds, see our fraudulent conveyance page and the case-law library. Common questions
Frequently asked
Which is better, a Nevis trust or a Belize trust?
Both provide strong statutory protection at similar cost. Nevis is usually the better choice when the plan pairs the trust with an LLC, because the Nevis LLC charging-order statute is among the strongest anywhere. Belize is often marginally cheaper and its trust statute is the more aggressive of the two.
Do Nevis trusts require a creditor to post a bond?
Nevis has historically required a creditor to post a cash bond before commencing proceedings against a Nevis trust, which is a meaningful practical obstacle because it forces a creditor to fund the fight up front.
